“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky
It’s so easy to talk yourself out of trying something new or taking a chance. That job you want to apply for but don’t think you’re qualified for, the cute girl you’re nervous to ask out, the big promotion you’d love to go for but don’t want to rock the boat. I’ve been there, and by always playing it safe, I definitely missed some shots.
But Gretzky’s point is, if you don’t put yourself out there and take those shots in the first place, you have zero chance of scoring. You’re shutting yourself out before you even get a shot off. And while taking those chances opens you up to failing sometimes, it’s the only way to succeed.
Basically, Wayne is telling us we gotta get over our fear, stop psyching ourselves out, and take more shots if we ever want to score goals, whether in our careers, dating lives, or anything else important to us. I’m still working on getting comfortable taking more shots myself, but keeping his advice in mind definitely motivates me to put myself out there more. Because the shots you don’t take are always guaranteed to miss.
